Search Engine Marketing

By definition, search engine marketing (SEM) is the process of internet marketing that promotes websites by increasing their visibility in search engine results pages (SERPs). As marketing goes, search engine marketing is by far the most complicated business marketing form. However, done correctly, it’s dramatically superior to print, radio and television in terms of cost, ROI, reach and conversion. Once your search engine marketing campaign is tuned-in, it will reliably produce, time and time again; like the machine that it is.

Traffic is Not Your Friend

Fact is that a lot of traffic to your website comes at a price; raw traffic is wasteful, and expensive. A good example is print and television advertising. With these mediums a company’s ad is disseminated to everyone in a particular market (broadcasting) and it hopes to catch the attention of those who might be interested in the product or service. And, since it has to reach those few who might be interested, at a time when they are ready to buy, repetition is the only way to do it. Everyone else watching those commercials is annoyingly bombarded by repetitive ads that they might never need. Many instances have shown a reverse affect to this type of forced branding, and have done more harm than good. This creates a high impression rate with a low conversion rate. We wouldn’t throw out a net and catch every fish in the ocean just to harvest the few Blackspotted Rubberlip Perches that might want to buy your fish food. And, unless you have a price markup percentage in the thousands, the result is a huge expensive and annoying waste. In traditional advertising, businesses are sold on “impressions” while with search engine marketing the impressions are always free; you only pay for prospects that already want what you have. Search engine marketing is, by far, the most efficient form of advertising.

Don’t Target Them...Make Them Target You

Think of search engine marketing as a humanity filter. Unlike traditional advertising platforms, search engine marketing has the unique ability of being able to display your ad or website to a person who wants to see it, at the time they want to see it. And by not using the old “broadcasting” method, web advertisers enjoy ridiculously high conversion rates by comparison. It’s like your website is parked in a holding area until someone types one of your key phrases. Then your website or ad appears at the right time, at the right place and for the right person.

But Wait, It Gets Better!

Unlike ever before, we now have the ability to know how customers found you, what words they used to find you, when they visited, how long they visited along with a complete matrix of other valuable information that gives search engine marketing the ability to control and refine efforts to laser-like accuracy.

These features are why search engine marketing is predicted to surpass radio and television by 2012 with a $55 billion annual gross. Search engine marketing is the leading edge of a wave that is changing the entire industry.
